Why We Love Isle of Palms County Park

We really loved taking our daughter Aaliyah here the last time we did a Charleston beach day trip.

To be honest, as a student at College of Charleston, I always preferred Folly Beach for a day trip, and it was my favorite Charleston beach due to the relaxed vibes.

However, after having a child, having access to things like decent bathrooms and being able to just park once and not worry about driving around anymore to find lunch all of a sudden seems a lot more important!

Folly does have a county park as well, but it’s just isolated away from the little downtown where all the restaurants and shops are.

On Isle of Palms, it’s completely the opposite. The Isle of Palms County Park is right next to the Front Beach “downtown” district, where almost all the restaurants on the islands are.

So, you can just park once and spend the day enjoying yourself.

Plus, Isle of Palms is great. A good friend of mine had a beach house here growing up, and I had many great times here. It’s a great beach, wider than Folly, to be honest.

So, if you’re coming for just a day trip to the beaches near Charleston, especially if you have kids in tow, Isle of Palms County Park beach really makes such a great option!

Isle of Palms County Park Beach Guide

In the sections below, I’ll cover all the practical details to help you plan your visit to Isle of Palms County Park.

Getting There: Where is Isle of Palms County Park?

Isle of Palms County Park is located on 14th Avenue just off the beach in the downtown restaurant and shopping area of Isle of Palms, known as Front Beach.

When you come over the Isle of Palms Connector, go straight through the traffic light across Palm Boulevard, and the park is located on the left. You should see signs pointing out the entrance gate, and possibly a line of cars to get in.

If you are coming over to Isle of Palms from Sullivan’s Island, just continue straight on Palm Boulevard after crossing the bridge over Breach Inlet, and turn right at 14th Avenue (you’ll see the connector to the left).

Other Isle of Palms Parks

There are actually two Isle of Palms Parks: the Isle of Palms County Park and the Isle of Palms Recreation Center.

The Recreation Center is located a few blocks off the beach in the more residential area of the island. There is a playground as well as fields and bathrooms here. It might be a good option to take your kids if you’re staying on the island and just want some playtime.

However, for a beach day, you’ll want to choose the county park.

Facilities at the County Park on Isle of Palms

Honestly, on our visit, I was pretty impressed with the facilities at the park.

There are pretty good bathrooms, and they were clean on our visit. They are located up on the second floor of the little building on the park grounds, by the way.

There are solid changing areas as well as showers to wash the sand off after hitting the beach.

There is also a pretty solid playground, a beach volleyball area, picnic tables, and even small charcoal grills available for use.

The park also rents beach gear like umbrellas, chairs, and boogie boards, and there is a small snack bar open for part of the year.

We also noticed they had things like goggles and sandcastle building stuff for sale as well.

Unfortunately, for me, who forgot my flip flops, not for the first time, there were no flip flops for sale though.

Still, overall, I was pretty impressed with the facilities at Isle of Palms Park.

Isle of Palms County Park Beach

Of course, the million dollar question, is how is the Isle of Palms County Park beach?

It’s great, in my opinion.

The beach area in front of the park is nice and wide with plenty of sand.

This is, of course, the part of Isle of Palms that gets most crowded. So, you might want to walk a bit in either direction to get out of the thickest of the crowd during busier times of year.

There’s a good amount of space, though, so you should be able to find a comfortable spot without going too far.

It might be worth pointing out that there is a pier here, but it is private to the condos next door, and is not open to the public.

On the other hand, in what I think is a really nice touch, there is a nice boardwalk over the dunes out to the beach.

You’ll find it to the right of the playground when facing the beach, and there is also a set of stairs out to the beach directly in front of the changing area on the left hand side of the park.

The boardwalk to the right also includes handicap accessible ramps, and there are some little showers here to wash sand off as you exit the beach too.

In an even better touch, there is a long, canvas style, ramp thing over the thickest of the sand out to the beach. This makes the beach much more handicap accessible than most beaches, and it just so happens to make pulling a wagon full of beach gear and a toddler a whole lot easier!

So, I definitely appreciated that touch!

Beach Gear Rental Fees

The prices listed below were taken from the park’s webpage, and are up to date as of April 2026. You may want to double check. Do keep in mind a Photo ID is required for all rentals.

Equipment Available and Rental Fees:

• Beach Chair: $15 a day
• Beach Umbrella: $25 a day
• 2 Beach Chairs and Umbrella: $45
• Boogie Boards: $15 each a day plus a $25 deposit

The webpage also mentions wheelchair rentals, but does not list a price. I’d interpret that as meaning they are free for visitors who require them but cannot 100% confirm that.

Are There Lifeguards at Isle of Palms County Park?

Yes, but not everyday or all year.

Lifeguards are on duty on the weekends only from early May (May 9th, the Saturday after the first full week in May in 2026) until Memorial Day (the last Monday in May).

From Memorial Day through the first full week of August (August 9th in 2026), lifeguards are on duty daily.

Finally, starting the second week of August through the last weekend in September (September 27th in 2026), lifeguards are only on duty on the weekends once again.

If you’re reading this in 2027 or beyond, you can confirm the dates on the park’s webpage.

Can You Have Dogs at Isle of Palms County Park?

Yes, dogs are allowed at the Isle of Palms County Park.

Within the park grounds, dogs must be leashed and under control of their owner at all times.

On the beach, the island’s normal rules apply, which require dogs be leashed except for the early morning or late evening hours.

Restaurants Near IOP County Park

Once you’ve spent the morning enjoying the beach and worked up an appetite, the park’s close proximity to dining options is what I think really sets Isle of Palms Beach County Park apart.

Pretty much all of the dining options on Isle of Palms are located within a short walk of the county park.

You can even walk down the beach to get to most of them!

Those include the long running favorites of Coconut Joes and the Windjammer, both of which have cool beach bar and grill style vibes.

We really enjoyed Lawrence’s Seafood Company on our last visit. There is a pizza place and ice cream stand at the little strip mall style shopping center across the street from the beachfront, and several other good looking options all within the few block vicinity that makes up the Front Beach downtown district here.

Snack Bar at the Isle of Palms County Park

The park’s website indicates that the snack bar opens on April 1st. It does not indicate a closing date, it says hours vary, and there is no menu.

Based on the lifeguard schedule and seasonal changes to rates, I’d suspect the snack bar is probably only open on weekends to start, then open daily during the peak summer period, then only on weekends again through September or October.

I wouldn’t expect much here either, sodas, chips, popsicles, and maybe things like hot dogs. Fortunately, there are plenty of good options nearby.

Hotels Near Isle of Palms County Park

There aren’t many hotel options at all on IOP, but just about all of them are close to the county park.

The Palms Oceanfront Hotel and the Seaside Inn are both right here in the restaurant district and just a couple blocks from the park.

The Sea Cabins Condo complex is actually right next door to the park, and it is the owner and operator of the pier. So, if you’re planning to stay on the island, it could be a good option if you wanted access to the pier.

Parking at the Isle of Palms Beach County Park

There are 445 parking spots at Isle of Palms County Park.

According to the park’s website, the lot often fills by 10:30 am on weekends during the summer.

It’s worth pointing out that once the line has backed up to 20 cars, Isle of Palms police may divert cars to other lots nearby.

Also, the park closes to incoming traffic 30 minutes before closure (see hours below).

Skip the Parking Headache and Use the Shuttle

The Isle of Palms shuttle is an under appreciated and little known way to avoid dealing with parking.

It departs from the Mount Pleasant Towne Center Mall, where there is plenty of free parking, and it drops off right outside the park. The shuttle connects to the larger CARTA system around Charleston as well, but it only runs on weekends, and only seasonally in the summer.

However, it’s a really great option to avoid dealing with parking when crowds are the largest.

Isle of Palms County Park Parking Fees

I think the cost of parking at the Isle of Palms County Park is pretty reasonable, especially if you do plan to spend a full day at the beach, and taking into account that you won’t need to move around to find food.

Parking rates vary by season, and they generally line up with what you’ll pay at the paid public parking lots nearby.

It might be worth confirming on the park’s website, but the below rates are updated as of April 2026:

  • $5 per car
• March
  • $10 per car
• April
  • $15 per car
• May-Labor Day (First Monday in September)
  • Monday-Friday
    • $15
  • Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays
    • $25
• September after Labor Day
  • $15
• October
  • $10

• Larger Vehicles (year round prices)
  • RVs and Campers: $40
  • Buses: $75
  • *RV and Bus access is not permitted on weekends from April 1-Labor Day.

It’s worth pointing out here that there is no entrance fee for walking into the park (or riding a bike).

The city only enforces paid parking from March to October.

So, if you’re coming from November to February, you can just park on the street nearby for free and walk in to freely access the facilities and amenities at the park.

Isle of Palms County Park Hours

The park’s hours might be another factor in whether you decide to go ahead and park in the park’s parking lot or choose a lot or street parking, especially depending on season, as like parking fees, hours vary by season.

Here are the park’s hours currently listed on its website as of April 2026:

• January and February
  • 10 am to sunset
• March and April
  • 9 am to sunset
• May to Labor Day
  • 9 am to 8 pm
• September and October
  • 9 am to sunset
• November and December
  • 10 am to sunset

So, you might want to opt for street or lot parking if you arrive much earlier than the opening hours of the park, then just walk over and make use of its facilities for free.

Likewise, you might need to move your car if you’re staying past closing time, perhaps for dinner, drinks, or to catch a show at the Windjammer.

Keep in mind paid parking in both the lots and on the street are enforced from 8 am to 8 pm, only from March to October, and rates do vary based on the time of year.

Park Closures

There are 4 days a year that the park is closed.

They are:

• Thanksgiving Day
• Christmas Eve
• Christmas Day
• New Year’s Day

What to Bring to Isle of Palms County Park

You’ll of course want your standard beach gear, including bathing suit and sunscreen.

While you can rent beach chairs, umbrellas, and boogie boards at the park, it’s best to bring your own if you have them. Keep in mind there are decent showers to wash sand off things before packing them.

Don’t forget there’s a handy walkway out to the beach, so definitely bring that wagon for your beach gear.

There are also the grills, so you can bring your own food and drinks if you like.

I’d recommend a decent cooler, since single use styrofoam coolers are prohibited on Isle of Palms. That goes for plastic bottles and cups too, although I’d imagine enforcement is not always very strict.

Keep in mind as well that glass bottles and alcohol are also prohibited on Isle of Palms, like all the other Charleston beaches.

While enforcement of the alcohol rules is not always very strict if it’s not obviously visible, given the park is family friendly, often crowded, and is in the heart of IOP’s downtown, where beach patrol is more likely to be present, I’d caution against pushing your luck with Solo cups here, and just walk over to Coconut Joes.

Oh, and don’t forget your flip flops!

Ready to Visit Isle of Palms County Park?

If you’re looking for easy access to public beach facilities, rentals, and reasonably easy and affordable parking, all within walking distance to restaurants, it’s really tough to beat Isle of Palms County Park as the best option for a beach day in the Charleston area.

I know we will probably plan to make this our beach day trip option of choice at least until our kids are older and quite possibly beyond.
