Isle of Palms Parking: A Practical Guide

The Lowdown on Isle of Palms Parking

As one of the best beaches near Charleston, Isle of Palms is a popular option for day trips and vacations, but parking on the island can be a tricky task.

Isle of Palms has both public parking as well as permit only parking.

Public parking on Isle of Palms includes paid parking as well as some free Isle of Palms beach parking.

I’ll go into more details below on each, including the times of year and times of day Isle of Palms paid parking is actually enforced.

However, to quickly summarize, there are two paid public parking lots, paid street parking, and paid parking at the Isle of Palms county park all around the main “downtown” Front Beach area, which is where you’ll find most of the restaurants on the island.

There are also some zones designated as public and free Isle of Palms beach parking.

When is Paid Parking Enforced on Isle of Palms?

Before we get into the nitty gritty details on rates, let’s discuss when you actually have to pay and when you can get free parking on Isle of Palms

Paid parking on Isle of Palms is only enforced between March and October and between 8 am and 8 pm.

That means if you are visiting Isle of Palms from November to February, there is no need to pay for any of the public parking, neither in the lots nor along the street.

Keep in mind the 8 am and 8 pm times as well if you’re just popping down to the Front Beach area to have breakfast, dinner, drinks, or catch sunset from the beach.

Skip the Hassle and Take the Shuttle to Isle of Palms

Not enough people know there is a shuttle to Isle of Palms!

The Isle of Palms shuttle runs from Towne Centre in Mount Pleasant on weekends during the summer, and it connects to the larger CARTA bus system in Charleston.

Given summer weekends are the busiest time of year, and parking on Isle of Palms is limited, this can make a good alternative.

Plus, even if you’re coming from elsewhere or don’t want to bus the whole way, you can also just park for free at the mall and then take the shuttle to and from the beach.

Paid Public Parking at Isle of Palms Options

For most people coming on a day trip, choosing one of the paid public Isle of Palms parking options is probably the easiest.

There are several options, and these Isle of Palms parking options put you within an easy walking distance to the island’s restaurants and public facilities at the county park.

They are:

• All Day Parking Lots
• Hourly Street Parking
• Parking at the County Park

Let’s discuss each.

Public Parking Lots on Isle of Palms

There are two public Isle of Palms parking lots.

They are known as Lot A and Lot B, and both are located on Pavilion Drive within a short walk to Front Beach and a public beach access point.

Lot A is located between the back side of the little strip mall shopping center and the Isle of Palms Fire Station.

This lot is paved, and it does have handicapped parking.

Meanwhile, Lot B, which is larger, is unpaved and located just across the street, between the Ocean Inn and the beachfront Ocean Boulevard.

Rates for Isle of Palms Parking Lots

Rates for the IOP parking lots vary by season. You generally pay a daily rate, however, hourly parking is available after 4 pm.

The rates below are taken from this official Isle of Palms parking authority site and are updated as of April 2026. You might want to double check them though, especially if you’re reading this a long time after that latest update.

• May 1st-Labor Day (first Monday in September)
  • Monday-Friday

    • $3 an hour after 4 pm

    • $25 a day
    • $3 an hour after 4 pm
• September (after Labor Day)
  • $15 a day
  • $3 an hour after 4 pm
• October
  • $10 a day
  • $3 an hour after 4 pm

As you can see, rates for Isle of Palms beach parking in the public lots only vary by day during the busiest summer season, and while the daily price varies by season, the hourly rate is always the same.

So, depending on time of year and how long you think you’ll be at the beach, you’ll have to balance choosing one of the Isle of Palms parking lots versus paid Isle of Palms street parking (see below).

Payment for both lots can be made by mobile phone or at a kiosk. Paying using the kiosks or mobile does require a credit card or debit card.

Be sure to put your receipt on your dashboard, visible through the windshield if you pay at the kiosk, and be sure you enter your correct license plate number when using both the kiosks and mobile payments.

You might want to keep in mind that there is a 35-cent convenience fee for paying via mobile. You do get the added benefit of a text sent 15 minutes before your time is up though.

Weekly Passes

It’s worth pointing out that you can buy a weekly pass, valid for 7 consecutive days from date of purchase, for the two public parking lots for $100 during the March-October enforcement period.

For what it’s worth, you’ll save about $25 for 5 weekdays and 2 weekend days (add another $10 in savings if one of your weekdays is a holiday) if you use the pass instead of paying everyday during the summer season.

Meanwhile, you’ll save $5 on 7 days of daily parking fees in April or September if you buy a weekly pass.

During March and October, it’s $30 cheaper to just pay the $10 daily rate 7 times, so I wouldn’t recommend the weekly parking pass.

Free Isle of Palms Resident Parking

Keep in mind, cars with Isle of Palms resident parking permits can park free in Lot A or B all year.

Paid Hourly Street Parking on Isle of Palms

There are a good number of paid street parking spots along Ocean Boulevard, right along the strip where most of Isle of Palms’s restaurants, bars, and shops are located between 10th and 14th Avenues.

Spots are available on both sides of the road, with some being diagonal pull in spots and some parallel parking spots.

Generally, these are going to be your most cost efficient option for parking on Isle of Palms if you’re only coming for a few hours, especially during summer high season, when daily rates in the lots are higher.

Of course, this is the most crowded time of year when street parking might be tougher to find too!

Rates and Payment Procedures for Paid Street Parking on Isle of Palms

The hourly rate for Isle of Palms street parking spots is always $3 an hour, 7 days a week, from March to October.

Look for little kiosks to enter your desired time and pay nearby in the median or on the sidewalk (and don’t forget to display your receipt!). You can also pay via mobile.

If you’d like to park for more than a few hours, be sure to compare the daily rates for the lots listed above, especially during the low season when paying for all day might end up cheaper than paying for 4+ hours on the street.

Parking at the County Park

Another good option, especially if you plan to spend all or most of the day, is to park at the Isle of Palms County Park.

You pay an entry and parking fee per car here, and there’s a pretty good sized unpaved lot, just a short walk from a nice, handicap accessible, boardwalk over to the beach, not to mention the public bathrooms and beach showers, beach gear rentals, and playground at the park.

The park’s facilities are just a block from the public parking lots too, so it still offers really easy walking access to the restaurants and shopping at Front Beach.

For families or just people who want access to public facilities, this is probably the best choice, and we were really happy we parked at the county park on our last visit with our daughter.

Parking at Isle of Palms County Park Rates

Much like the Isle of Palms parking lots, rates for parking at the Isle of Palms County Park vary by season.

Here’s a rundown of the rates listed on the county park’s site, last updated here in April 2026:

  • $10 per car
• April
  • $15 per car
• May-Labor Day (First Monday in September)
  • Monday-Friday
    • $15
  • Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays
    • $25
• September after Labor Day
  • $15
• October
  • $10

• Larger Vehicles (year round prices)
  • RVs and Campers: $40
  • Buses: $75
  • *RV and Bus access is not permitted on weekends from April 1-Labor Day.

As you can see, rates are pretty similar to the parking lots.

It is probably worth pointing out that there is no entry fee for walking into the park or using their facilities.

So, as long as you don’t mind walking an extra block or two and are coming either for only a few hours or during the off season when paid parking isn’t enforced, you can save a few bucks if you park in the lots or street parking and still get access to the bathrooms and showers at the park.

For a full day visit, especially if I plan on hitting the beach, I’d probably just go ahead and park here though.

Where to find Free Parking at Isle of Palms Beach

In addition to the paid Isle of Palms parking options discussed above, there is also a “beach parking district” where there is free, no permit required, parking in the public right of way. That means on the side of the street in layman’s terms.

This regulation is enforced from 9 am to 5 pm.

To park here, you’ll need to be sure all your tires are completely off the pavement and you don’t block any driveways, mailboxes, or public beach access paths.

The most useful place to park on the street for visitors will be on the oceanfront Palm Boulevard, which is free parking between 21st and 40th Avenue.

If you park on the beach side of Palm Boulevard, you need to make sure your tires are 4 feet off the pavement.

Meanwhile, if you park on the land side of this area, you need to use the marked angled spaces.

There are also a handful of residential streets off Palm Boulevard that fall within the free beach parking district and allow free public parking on the side of the road

However, since areas outside that zone are for residential permit holders only, it can be a tad complicated, and I’d recommend sticking to Palm Boulevard if you can.

If you can’t find anything there, you can look at the specific streets and blocks below, and be sure to keep a close eye out for signs too.

• 3rd Avenue between Ocean Boulevard and Charleston Boulevard
• East side of 4th Avenue between Ocean Boulevard and Charleston Boulevard
• 5th Avenue, between Ocean Boulevard and Carolina Boulevard
• 6th Avenue, between Ocean Boulevard and Carolina Boulevard
• 7th Avenue, between Ocean Boulevard and Carolina Boulevard
• East side of 8th Avenue, between Ocean Boulevard and Carolina Boulevard
• East side of 9th Avenue, between Ocean Boulevard and Carolina Boulevard
• Palm Boulevard between 21st Avenue and 40th Avenue
• Palm Boulevard between 42nd Avenue and 53rd Avenue

Golf Cart Parking on Isle of Palms

Since golf carts are fairly ubiquitous on Isle of Palms, I thought I’d add a few notes on golf cart parking at Isle of Palms as well.

There are a few designated free beach parking areas for golf carts on Isle of Palms.

They can be found at the corners of Palm Blvd with 28th and 31st Streets as well as Ocean Blvd with 9th Street.

Golf carts with resident permits can also park in a designated area on 52nd avenue (this is inside Wild Dunes).
